How to Create a Daily Skincare Routine
Great skin comes from good genes (if you're lucky!) and/or good daily habits. There's advice everywhere about the best way to take care of your skin, but most people should be using a cleanser, a toner and/or an exfoliant and a moisturizer for day and night. Your skincare routine tunes up your complexion so it’s functioning at its best, and also troubleshoots or targets any areas you want to work on. We all have different and specific skincare needs, so some people will use more or less products. Let's take a look at the five main steps of a daily skincare routine.
The Steps
Think of your skincare routine as consisting of five main steps:
- Cleansing — Washing your face.
- Exfoliating — Removing dead skin cells.
- Toning — Balancing the skin.
- Firming — Helps with elasticity and wrinkles.
- Moisturizing — Hydrating and softening the skin.
Tip: With any skincare product, apply in order of consistency — from thinnest to thickest. For example, cleanser, exfoliant, toner (if you use it), serum, and then moisturizer.

Toners
Consider toner to be optional. Think of it as a supplement; they deliver an extra shot of nutrients, helping the other products in your regimen absorb better, while still balancing your complexion. Toners should be done after cleansing and before putting on anything else; the traditional application method is to saturate a cotton pad and pass it over your face, but applying with clean hands is the most efficient. Just pour a few drops in your palm, then swipe it on. Most formulas can be used morning and night, but you might want to use those with exfoliating acids only at night or every other day.
